While riding my bike around different neighborhoods, I am often impressed with how clean everything is. Sometimes I wonder, "How do they do it?" In Japan, cleanliness is highly valued. Everyone participates in community cleaning. It is part of the routine in homes, in schools, and in the community. Every school has a designated cleaning time, and every student has a certain role in the cleaning. This past Sunday I got to participate in my first community cleaning! Sunday morning from 7:30-8:30am, in the rain, the whole neighborhood came together to pull weeds and tidy up the neighborhood playground area. They call it "kusahiki", which means "pull weeds". It felt really good to come together as a community and clean up. Then after an hour, everyone stopped and had drinks together.
